Vegas selects the Swedish puck-moving defenseman.

NHL: NHL Draft David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

The Vegas Golden Knights select defenseman Erik Brännström out of the SHL with the 15th pick in Friday’s NHL Draft.

The Golden Knights went a little off-the-board, leaving picks such as Timothy Liljegren and Juuso Valimaki on the table in order to select the undersized blueliner out of Sweden.

Make no mistake, the Golden Knights are getting a heck of a player.

The 5-foot-10, 179-pound puck-moving defenseman is a fantastic skater with a very good shot. He has a high hockey IQ. He’s very good at retrieving loose pucks and getting out in transition, something that will be key for him.

His play in the J20 SuperElit league was eye-opening, scoring 30 points in 26 games. But, he also got a taste at pro hockey against men when he suited up for HV71 of the SHL.

A heads up that he’s only 17 years old.
