Golden Knights select Cody Glass with No. 6 pick in 2017 NHL Entry Draft

With the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, the Vegas Golden Knights select center Cody Glass of the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks, who becomes the first draft pick in franchise history.

Glass, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, just finished up his third year with the Winterhawks. After a pair of seasons getting adjusted to the WHL, Glass broke out in 2016-17, scoring 32 goals and 94 points in 69 games. Not only can he score, but Glass also plays a respectable defensive game as well.

It would be a bit ambitious to assume Glass will start the season with the Golden Knights, however. While Glass certainly impressed last season in the WHL, he’s far from a finished product. At 6’3”, he has good size but weighs just 180 pounds, so he’ll need to fill out his body a little more before joining the big club. An extra year in the WHL may be good for his development.

Overall, though, this is a great first pick for the Golden Knights.

Of course, this won’t be the end for the Golden Knights in the first round. Vegas also owns the No. 13 and No. 16 selection, thanks to the deals they made as a result of the expansion draft.
