With the No. 17 overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, the Vegas Golden Knights select forward Peyton Krebs from the WHL’s Winnipeg Ice!
Krebs, 5-foot-11 and 181 pounds, is coming off a big season as captain of the Ice. In 64 games, Krebs netted 19 goals and 49 assists for 68 points. While those statistics aren’t necessarily amazing, keep in mind that Krebs played for a horrible Ice team this past season, and he was responsible for a large portion of his team’s offense.
There is a drawback, though. Krebs suffered a partially torn Achilles tendon while training earlier this month. He underwent surgery for the injury on June 7 and likely will not be healthy enough to take part in training camp. However, while his injury isn’t ideal, Krebs, a center, likely would not be playing for the Golden Knights in 2019-20 even had he not suffered the patrially torn Achilles. Vegas is currently loaded down the middle with William Karlsson (who looks to be on the verge of signing a long-term extension), Paul Stastny, Erik Haula and, of course, Cody Glass in the fold.
Krebs is an excellent 200-foot forward capable of playing in any given situation. His vision in the offensive zone is particularly outstanding, as evidenced by his 49 assists this past season.
Without the Achilles injury, Krebs likely would have been a top-10 pick. This is excellent value for Vegas at No. 17.
