Golden Knights sign Jonas Rondbjerg to 3-year, entry-level contract

The Vegas Golden Knights made a pretty notable transaction Thursday. No, they did not make any big trades (that will likely come a little closer to the draft), but they did sign Danish prospect Jonas Rondbjerg to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Rondbjerg, selected in the third round (No. 65 overall) of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, is an intriguing prospect in the Knights’ system. Born and raised in Denmark, a country not known for being all that competitive in hockey, Rondbjerg impressed scouts with his solid play in the Swedish SuperElit league in 2016-17. After being drafted, Rondbjerg continued to impress as he registered six goals and 11 points in 35 games with the Växjö Lakers HC of the SHL. He was also a standout player on a bad Denmark team at the U20 World Junior Championship that year, scoring two goals and seven points in six games.

The 2018-19 season wasn’t as kind to Rondbjerg as his draft-plus-one campaign, though. Despite earning more time in the SHL this season, he only logged a grand total of six points (just a pair of goals) in 45 games with Växjö. Still, it is impressive that he managed to hold his own while playing against grown men in Sweden.

Rondbjerg isn’t close to earning a role in the NHL, but he does appear to be one of Vegas’ more promising forward prospects. Expect to see him play a significant role in the AHL for the Chicago Wolves next season.
