Marc-Andre Fleury ties NHL record with 14th consecutive postseason appearance

Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury will start against the St. Louis Blues in their round robin game at Rogers Place on Thursday.

That puts him in rarefied company.

Fleury will make his 14th consecutive appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, tying Tony Esposito for the longest run by a goaltender in NHL history. Fleury’s appearance in this year’s playoffs is now the longest active streak among the four professional sports.

  1. Marc-Andre Fleury (14)
  2. J.J. Redick (13)
  3. Kyle Korver (12)
  4. Matthew Slater (11)
  5. Patrick Chung (11)
  6. Tom Brady (11)

If you’re keeping track at home, that’s two of the best 3-point shooters in the modern NBA era, two current New England Patriots players, and one guy who may or may not be decent at throwing the football.

It’s quite a remarkable run for Fleury. The streak could’ve ended at 11 had the Golden Knights said logic made sense in their inaugural season. Fleury’s postseason streak began the first 11 years with the Pittsburgh Penguins, which included winning the Stanley Cup three times. He has been the primary starter in net the past two playoff runs in Vegas — which included the run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2018.

This third year will be different for Fleury, sharing the crease with Robin Lehner. Coach Peter DeBoer has rotated the two goalies since Lehner was acquired in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks on Feb. 24. Lehner made 25 saves in Monday’s 5-3 win against the Dallas Stars.

With Fleury starting today, it’s likely Lehner will face the Colorado Avalanche in both teams’ final round robin game before the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

However it turns out, this is a remarkable feat for Fleury and he should be commended greatly for it.
