Mark Stone named league’s First Star of the Week

Vegas Golden Knights captain Mark Stone was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week for the week ending March 7.

Stone had a great week on the scoresheet with two goals and eight assists. That included the five-primary-assist game last Monday against the Minnesota Wild, notwithstanding the overtime winner from Max Pacioretty.

Stone also had a secondary assist on Pacioretty’s other overtime winner Friday against the San Jose Sharks.

Stone’s strong week has been a microcosm to his strong play all year. The captain leads the Golden Knights in scoring with 27 points in 21 games and is certainly going to be a candidate for the Hart Trophy (and dare we say the Selke) when this season wraps up.

The Golden Knights are atop the West Division in points (33) and points percentage (.786) with four games in hand on the second-place St. Louis Blues. Vegas is atop the NHL in points percentage with two games in hand on the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

Vegas plays the first of a two-game set at Minnesota on Monday. Stone is a game-time decision after leaving Saturday’s game with a lower-body injury.
