Golden Knights Sign Phil Kessel to One-Year Deal

Phil Kessel is a Vegas Golden Knight!

Tonight the team announced that they signed the veteran winger to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million a season.

Kessel is coming off a season in which he tallied 52 points in 82 games for the Arizona Coyotes. He is the NHL’s active leader in consecutive games played at 982 games, and he needs 7 more to tie the all-time leader Keith Yandle.

His best days are behind him, but Kessel can be productive in the right situation. The talent on the Golden Knights’ roster gives Bruce Cassidy some options, and it will be interesting to see where he fits in. Defensively Kessel is going to be an adventure, but that too can be mitigated with the right set of linemates.

Overall this is a relatively low risk signing at just $1.5 million, and Kessel is going to have a chance to make history in a Golden Knights jersey. There’s the ironman streak, he’s one goal away from 400, and 44 points away from 1,000. He will be very motivated to hit those milestones, and if he is able to reach them all it will mean he’s helping the Golden Knights win hockey games.
