The Knights Watch: Oct. 9 – Oct. 15

Welcome back to The Knights Watch.

If you’re new to this series, allow me to explain who I am and what this is.

The Knights Watch is Knights On Ice’s weekly update series featuring news and statistics of Vegas Golden Knight prospects. At least the ones that are not in the NHL or AHL. For those players you will have to look for Shepard Price and his AHL wrap up.

As said, these will be weekly so keep your eye out every Wednesday(ish) for when this is published. I will win no glory by doing it, but I shall live and die at my post. I am the watcher of prospects. I am the shield that guards the Knights On Ice readership from having to do all this research themselves. I pledge my life and honor to the Knight’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

(Yes, I will be shoehorning Game of Thrones references into every edition.)

So, let’s get started.

In our last instalment we covered Sept. 24 to Oct. 8, so now we will recap the week that was from Oct. 9 to Oct. 15.

CHL

Cody Glass, C (Portland Winterhawks, WHL)
Since Last Update: (3 Games Played) 0 Goals-4 Assists-4 Points
Overall: (9 GP) 4G-13A-17P

Nick Suzuki, C (Owen Sound Attack, OHL)
Since Last Update: (4 GP) 3G-5A-8P
Overall: (9 GP) 7G-11A-18P

He can score goals, he can set them up, and he’s also apparently made of rubber. Watch as opposing players bounce off of him.

Technically this came out on the 16th and should be in next weeks update, but I’m including it in this week. Suzuki was named one of the OHL’s best players by fellow prospects in a poll done by the Athletic’s Scott Wheeler. Game recognise game.

Nicolas Hague, D (Mississauga Steelheads, OHL)
Since Last Update: (3 GP) 2G-0A-2P
Overall: (8 GP) 2G-3A-5P

When did Hague get good with the puck? Two goals in three games is nice production from the 2017 second-round selection. Can’t draw much of a conclusion from a five second clip, but he looks good in those five seconds.

Dylan Coghlan, D (Tri-City Americans, WHL)
Since Last Update: (3 GP) 3G-2A-5P
Overall: (9 GP) 4G-3A-7P

Dylan Ferguson, G (Kamloops Blazers, WHL)
Last Update: 0-6, 6.04 Goals Against Average, .827 Save Percentage
Overall: 2-7, 4.55 GAA, .867 SV%

Three straight games with a save percentage of at least .929 has Ferguson trending up for the first time this season. Here’s hoping he can build on his recent success.

INTERNATIONAL

Nikita Gusev, W (SKA St. Petersburg, KHL)
Since Last Update: (4 GP) 1G-3A-4P
Overall: (23 GP) 13G-19A—32P

Bit of a slow week for the KHL superstar. By his standards, anyway. Still sits atop the KHL scoring race and is still, for my money, the best player not currently in the NHL (although some of our readers would certainly disagree). And I don’t think it is particularly close, though I may be biased.

Erik Brännström, D (HV71, SHL)
Since Last Update: (2 GP) 0G-1A-1P
Overall: (10 GP) 0G-2A—2P

NON-CONTRACT PROSPECTS

Jonas Røndbjerg, RW/LW (Växjö Lakers HC, SHL)
Since Last Update: (2 GP) 0G-0A-0P
Overall: (9 GP) 1G-2A-3P

Jake Leschyshyn, C (Regina Pats, WHL)
Since Last Update: (3 GP) 0G-1A-1P
Overall: (5 GP) 1G-2A-3P

Maksim Zhukov, G (Green Bay Gamblers, USHL)
Overall: 2-0, 1.99 GAA, .924 SV%

Lukas Elvenes, C (IK Oskarshamn, Allsvenskan)
Since Last Update: (3 GP) 1G-2A-3P
Overall: (9 GP) 2G-6A-8P

Jack Dugan, LW (Chicago Steel, USHL)
Since Last Update: (1 GP) 1G-1A-2P
Overall: (3 GP) 3G-2A-5P

Nick Campoli, C (North York Rangers, OJHL)
Since Last Update: (2 GP) 2G-1A-3P
Overall: (14 GP) 10G-4A-14P

Jiri Patera, G (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, USHL)
Overall: 1-2, 3.35 GAA, .903 SV%

Ben Jones, C (Niagara IceDogs, OHL)
Since Last Update: (2 GP) 1G-2A-3P
Overall: (9 GP) 6G-6A-12P

Top Prospect of the Week

A new addition to The Knights Watch that I will be doing every week is naming the week’s top prospect. This will not necessarily be the player who scores the most goals or has the most points. Consideration will also go to players who show the most weekly improvement or who break a bad streak.

With that in mind, I name this week’s top prospect: Dylan Ferguson. The young netminder broke a streak of rather awful play and has turned in a week of solid work. For his play this week, I give him the first ever top prospect award.
