Mark Stone named finalist for Selke Trophy
Stone’s stellar regular season lead on both ends of the ice led to nomination.
Golden Knights captain Mark Stone has been named a finalist for the Selke Trophy, given to the best two-way forward in the league.
Florida Panthers center Sasha Barkov and Boston Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron are the other two finalists. Barkov is a first-time finalist, while Bergeron is looking to win his fifth Selke.
Stone finished with a league-high 58 takeaways in the condensed 56-game season, the second time in three seasons he led the NHL in the category. It’s the second time in three years Stone is being recognized as one of the best defensive forwards in the game; he finished second in 2019 when Ryan O’Reilly won, and was fifth last season.
Stone blocked 30 shots this season, second only to Barkov (37).
The Vegas captain was an integral part to the top penalty-killing unit this season. The Golden Knights allowed only 19 goals in 144 times down a man. Stone ranked third among all forwards in shorthanded ice time.
No winger has won the Selke since Jere Lehtinen with the Dallas Stars in 2003.
The other side to the Selke trophy is a nominee’s offensive game and that is a category that Stone did not disappoint in. Stone tallied 61 points (21 goals, 40 assists) this season, the most of any finalist.
Stone is the second Golden Knights player to be named a finalist for an award. Marc-Andre Fleury is a finalist for the Vezina Trophy.
