Vegas Golden Knights Come Back to Grab Point, Lose in Overtime 4-3 to Carolina Hurricanes

The Vegas Golden Knights rallied from a two-goal deficit twice on Tuesday vs. the Carolina Hurricanes, but ultimately lost in the 3-on-3 overtime period. Both sides played a scoreless first, but the second period is where the Golden Knights fell into a hole quickly. Vegas surrendered two goals against in a span of 57 seconds to go down 2-0 early into the second period. Nino Niederreiter scored his 12th goal of the year at 4:44, and Vincent Trocheck tallied his 10th at 5:41.

The Golden Knights got on the board toward the end of the period after Nolan Patrick made a nice little play going to the net, while putting the puck through his legs, and he tallied his 2nd goal of the season to make it 2-1.

The Hurricanes felt the goal shouldn’t count because there was some minor contact made by Brett Howden on Frederik Andersen. Video review determined that Howden’s contact with Andersen was initiated by the Hurricanes, so the goal stood and the Golden Knights were given a two-minute power play as a result of the failed challenge.

Vegas failed to score on the ensuing power play, they went 0/3 on the evening, and found themselves chasing that elusive tying goal. While attempting to do just that, Dylan Coghlan took a penalty at 8:26 of the period to put Carolina back on the power play, and Tony DeAngelo fired a puck on net that was tipped by Sebastian Aho at 8:32. Just like that the Golden Knights were down by two again.

Later on in the period Brett Howden was credited with a goal after tipping in a shot off the stick of Shea Theodore. The goal was Howden’s fifth of the year, and he continues to play well since joining the team from the New York Rangers.

Almost five minutes later Nic Hague rocketed a shot from the wall past Andersen to tie things up at 3-3, and that would be the final goal scored during the third period.

Both sides played a very exciting back-and-forth overtime period, but ultimately the Hurricanes took home the second point after Aho picked up his second goal of the game with just over a minute remaining in regulation.

Miscellaneous Numbers of Note

  • Laurent Brossoit stopped 26 of 30 shots in his first game action since January 2.
  • The Golden Knights went 0/3 on the power play, but did go 4/5 on the penalty kill, which is impressive considering the Hurricanes had the No. 5 power play in the league heading into the game.
  • Vegas ranked 20th in the league with a PK efficiency of 78.5, and that number will improve once the league updates the official stats.
  • Vegas was outshot 11 to 5 in the first period, but outshot the Hurricanes 22 to 17 in the final 40 minutes of regulation, and tied 2-2 in overtime.
  • Nolan Patrick tallied a goal and an assist, making this the first time he’s had a multi-point game since joining the Golden Knights/

Overall, the Golden Knights battled back twice, and managed to get a point in the second game of a back-to-back vs. a very good Hurricanes team. The Golden Knights are off on Wednesday, and will square off against the Florida Panthers on Thursday.
