Golden Knights 5, Red Wings 2: Welcome back, Zach Whitecloud

The Vegas Golden Knights continued their homestand against the Detroit Red Wings with a 5-2 win.

Zach Whitecloud returned to the lineup and made a great impact, but Shea Theodore was absent from the lineup after exiting the game in the third period against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Robin Lehner made his 14th start of the season in 17 games and was excellent as he stopped 26 of 28 shots in the game.

The game got out to a very quick start but neither team was able to get anything extremely dangerous generated.

The Golden Knights had two power play opportunities in the period. One was good and was able to get some looks but Vegas came up empty on both man-advantages.

The teams went to the locker rooms with the Red Wings outshooting the Knights 13-8.

In the second period, the Golden Knights offense exploded for four goals with two from Whitecloud.

The Knights got on the board around three minutes into the period with a rebound goal from Nic Hague. Alex Pietrangelo wristed one towards the net and the loose puck fell to Hague just outside of the crease.

The scoring continued as Whitecloud scored his first of the game two minutes later. Mark Stone fed him with a beautiful cross-ice pass at the circles and Whitecloud snuck a great wrist shot passed Thomas Greiss.

The Red Wings cut into the lead with a goal from Givani Smith, his first of the season.

Vegas once again added to its lead with another goal from Whitecloud. He gathered the puck at the blue line after a faceoff win from Nic Roy and wristed it towards and passed Greiss.

In the final minute, Paul Cotter pushed the lead to 4-1 with a beautiful move and shot passed Greiss.

Early in the third, the Knights added to the lead once again. After a slick pass from Mattias Janmark, Reilly Smith deked and roofed the puck passed newly entered goaltender, Alex Nedeljkovic.

Joseph Veleno got one back with a minute remaining in the game to cut the Vegas lead to 5-2. Overall, the Golden Knights lulled the Red Wings to sleep in the third and came away with the victory.

Vegas will wrap up its homestand against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.
